On April 22, 1991, the Chinese government officially recognized the American Chamber of Commerce in the People’s Republic of China as the only chamber representing the interest of American business in China. Since that time, AmCham China has been carrying the torch for American companies, supporting member success and contributing to the positive development of China’s business landscape.
It is hard to believe how far the chamber has grown and expanded since its early days after gaining official recognition. From an organization with no full-time staff, it has grown to over 50 full-time employees, encompassing the national headquarters in Beijing and three chamber chapters in Tianjin, Dalian, and Central China (Wuhan).
AmCham China has had a storied history, which we hope to reflect in the content below – from a walk through the best articles from China Brief over the years, to a look at our executive leadership going all the way back to the Reagan Administration. As with any history, the information is far from complete, as there are always new viewpoints and stories to tell. We welcome any information or photos that you would like to provide, which can help us move one step closer towards mapping our past. As members, you hold valuable pieces of the puzzle that will help us better understand where we came from so that we can better understand where we are going. (As the late Bob Marley once said, “In this great future, you can’t forget your past.”)
