AmCham China in Action

Branded Entertainment in China

AmCham-China hosted an informative event with Larry Namer, co-founder of E! Entertainment and METAN Development Group, titled “The Age of Branded Entertainment in China.” Held at the Kerry Center Hotel, the event drew more than 50 AmCham-China members and was moderated by AmCham-China’s Vice President of Communications, Matt Wisla.

Mr. Namer began his presentation describing the history of branded entertainment in the west. With the introduction of TiVo, the Internet, and media piracy, incorporating advertisements within the actual content has become more important than ever. In fact, when brands and content providers work close together, subtly integrating products into the narrative, the result can be extraordinarily effective and efficient. Mr. Namer explained that although branded entertainment is a relatively a new concept in China, the potential for future growth is enormous. As the industry evolves, new media platforms, such as music, mobile phones, comics, and the Internet, will allow advertisers to tap into a vast audience. Mr. Namer concluded by showing how his own company has utilized branded entertainment in shows like “Hello, Hollywood”.

The presentation was followed by a Q&A session. Participants then stayed on for drinks and networking.

Tianjin Eco City

More than 40 AmCham-China members attended a presentation at the China World Hotel on the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City. The event kicked off with a presentation by Mr. Lim Meng Hui, general manager for Economic Promotion, followed by Ms. Peng Cheng Yao, senior manager for Eco-technology, who briefed attendees on the idea behind the “Eco-City” and the timeline for the project. Mr. Zhang Heng, a senior manager for Economic Promotion with the local Tianjin government, explained the Chinese government’s role in the project, which is a 50/50 joint venture between a Chinese consortium led by Tianjin TEDA Investment Holding Co. and a Singaporean consortium led by the Keppel Group.

Mr. Lim presented drawings of the future city, which will be primarily residential – 80 percent of land will be devoted to housing the 350,000 new residents. The remaining land will be split between manufacturing space and a state-of-the-art facility for research in alternative energy technology and energy-saving devices. Ms. Peng elaborated on the technical specifications, explaining that each building will be required to meet a certain level of environmental sustainability. Other “eco-cities,” Ms. Peng said, make such "standards” optional, which undermines the effectiveness of the sustainability effort. Mr. Zhang highlighted the Chinese government’s involvement in the effort, pointing out that Tianjin’s Binhai New Area and the eco-city, much like Shanghai and Shenzhen in recent years, has become the area of the Chinese government’s economic focus.

The speakers from the eco-city project expressed their interest in collaborating with AmCham-China member companies to bring the eco-city to fruition.

The Age of Cloud Computing

More than 35 IT specialists and AmCham-China members attended a breakfast briefing on cloud computing. The insightful presentation jointly held with the United States Information Technology Office (USITO), offered attendees a thorough overview of cloud computing technology and its potential business applications.

The program was headlined by a speech from Merry Beekman, director for Global Field Marketing at Red Hat, who explained the background of cloud computing, current trends and challenges, as well as strategic directions and software developments.

The breakfast concluded with a discussion of the future of this technology, especially in the local context, and a promising outlook for the coming five years.
