AmCham China in Action

China's New Patent Law and What It Means for Business

Members of AmCham-China and the EU Chamber of Commerce in China filled the Kerry Centre's Kowloon Room on February 3 to see high-ranking Chinese officials and industry experts speak about implementing regulations for China’s new Patent Law. AmCham-China President Michael Barbalas gave opening remarks and congratulated China’s State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) on 30 years of operations.

Following the opening remarks, SIPO Commissioner Tian Lipu explained his office's new role in intellectual property (IP) protection and discussed new measures to improve patent quality and disseminate information. Later, Judge Kong Xiangjun, president of China’s Intellectual Property Tribunal, presented the newly issued judicial interpretation on patent infringement and discussed the scope of patent rights protection in China.

After the conclusion of the remarks by Mr. Tian and Judge Kong, the audience heard from a panel of patent experts. Patent counsel for ABB Ryan Huang, IBM senior counsel for IP law Zhang Yan, senior patent counsel for GlaxoSmithKline James Kellerman and Microsoft attorney Haitao Wu participated on the industry panel. The experts gave their opinions on the implementing regulations and what they mean for foreign businesses. The discussion was moderated by Of Counsel at Jones Day Mark Cohen, who serves as a co-chair for AmCham-China's IPR Forum.

The event closed with remarks from President of the EU Chamber of Commerce in China Joerg Wuttke about the future of foreign-invested enterprises in China under the country's Indigenous Innovation Policy. AmCham-China would like to thank all of the event's participants, including SIPO Director General Lu Guoliang for his continued support.

China’s Economy in 2010 and Beyond

AmCham-China, BritCham, China-Britain Business Council and the EU Chamber of Commerce in China came together in the Kerry Centre Hotel on February 1 to hear the forecasts of two leading economic experts. William Adams, resident economist at the Conference Board China Center for Economics and Business, shared his predictions about inflation, GDP growth and consumer spending in 2010. Meanwhile, Arthur Kroeber, managing director of research at advisory firm Dragonomics, presented his theories on China’s economic future beyond 2010. He addressed labor force demands and the consumer-price index. Richard Margolis of Rolls Royce North-East Asia moderated the lively presentation.

The discussion was followed by an extended question-and-answer session during which members probed the experts on their economic projections. Afterwards, a cocktail reception gave members from all four organizations a chance to meet, network and discuss China’s economic prospects for the coming years.

US Individual Income Tax Savings Tips for Now and the Future

On February 3, AmCham-China hosted an informative seminar on how expatriates living in China can prepare and save on their income tax contributions. About 50 members came to the chamber's Conference Center to hear advice from Russell T. Fisher, CPA, an AmCham-China member and US income tax guru.

After an introduction by Judith Karp, AmCham-China's vice president of membership, services and operations, Mr. Fisher presented a comprehensive overview of the current tax laws. He particularly focused on those areas relating to foreign tax credits and foreign income exclusion, while giving advice on investment strategies and savings plans. Being aware of the many small tax deductions available to expats will make a big difference in the long run, Mr. Fisher told the audience.

Mr. Fisher recommended managing taxes yourself as much as possible, but using a low cost tax service provider and getting expert advice whenever uncertainty arises. And of course, plan for tax savings year round and don't wait until it's too late.

January New Member Cocktail

On January 28, the Renaissance Beijing Hotel hosted and sponsored AmCham-China’s January New Member Cocktail reception.

The evening was punctuated by lively conversation and members took advantage of the elegant setting to meet their newest peers in the Beijing business community.

A number of members had their names pulled for one of the outstanding lucky draw prizes donated by sponsors.
