AmCham China in Action

Welcome Lunch for Wuhan’s New Consul General, Diane Sovereign

More than 70 members and guests of AmCham-China’s Central China Chapter attended the Welcome Luncheon for Wuhan’s new US Consul General, Diane Sovereign on February 4 in Wuhan.

The special guest speaker at the event was the US Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman Jr., who was also visiting Wuhan for the first time as Ambassador. Both the Ambassador and the new Consul discussed the US government’s activities in Wuhan and gave their views about important issues relating to US businesses in central China. They also discussed the chamber’s membership and importance of working together.

AmCham-China works in conjunction with the Consulate to hold briefings for members on the latest policies affecting American businesses. These briefings provide valuable insight into China’s macroeconomic situation and US-China bilateral relations.

In addition, US Consulate General Wuhan Diane Sovereign talked to AmCham-China Brief Insight recently about her new position, the challenges that face the US business community in Central China and cooperation with the AmCham-China, Central China Chapter.  Lunch with USTR Stratford and Deputy Assistant Secretary Kasoff

Members from AmCham-China, The US-China Business Council and the US Information Technology Office attended a luncheon briefing on January 29 with Assistant US Trade Representative Timothy Stratford and Deputy Assistant Secretary of the US Department of Commerce Dr. Ira Kasoff.

The speakers explained their recent visits with Chinese government officials and the upcoming plans of the Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade. Mr. Stratford emphasized the challenges foreign-invested enterprises have in qualifying for government procurement, and how these difficulties are heightened by preference for "indigenous innovation" products. In closing, the speakers recommended US businesses keep a long-term focus as they consider Chinese government policy.

The event concluded with a farewell to Timothy Stratford, who is leaving the USTR for private practice. Former leaders of AmCham-China took the stage to share stories and memories, and presented Mr. Stratford with a parting gift.
