AmCham China in Action

AmCham-China, Tianjin Chapter in association with Rutgers University EMBA Beijing Program held an informative briefing on how to manage today’s global supply chains. More than 30 AmCham-China members listened to hear Gordon Smouther, an Adjunct Professor at Rutgers University and supply chain maestro, share his expertise in logistics management. Mr. Smouther explained that with globalization minimizing the role of national boundaries, intensified competition and increased complexities have heightened the risks in global supply chains across practically all industries. Mr. Smouther provided details on how to identify such risks and suggested strategies for effectively managing an extended global supply chain.

AmCham-China, Tianjin Chapter recently hosted an event with Hewitt Associates where the company’s annual survey results were released and presented. More than 150 members and guests attended and heard experts discuss methods for attracting, motivating and retaining the best personnel. While the economic downturn has forced many businesses to rethink their approach to compensation and talent management, smart companies are finding ways to get the most from their employees without reducing the ability to compete for talent. The presenters provided timely strategies for creating performance-based incentives and motivating employees to achieve the right business outcomes. In addition, participants gained insight into Tianjin current work environment and had a chance to ask questions following the lectures.

AmCham-China’s conference room was filled on Wednesday, March 10, with parents and other interested members listening to what it means for children to grow up overseas. The head of Beijing BISS International School Dr. Ettie Zilber drew from her experiences, education, and extensive research and readings to present what she calls the “pleasures and pitfalls” of raising children internationally. She explained the idea of "third-culture kids” and described the varying influences and effects the parents and their employers, the international school, and the new community of peers have on these children.
A question-and-answer session at the end of the presentation revealed several “adult third-culture kids” in the audience, providing insight into how the ideas Dr. Zilber discussed have played out in the lives of AmCham-China members themselves.

On March 1, more than 400 domestic and foreign representatives from embassies, multinational companies, international institutions and governments participated in the 2010 International Forum on Development of World Cities at the China World Hotel, Beijing. After opening remarks from Mr. Ji Lin, Executive Vice-Mayor of Beijing, AmCham-China President Michael Barbalas delivered a keynote address titled “Bringing into Play the Role of International Organizations and Promoting Development of World Cities”. During the speech, Mr. Barbalas discussed the roles that nonprofits play in promoting economic and social development while providing suggestions for Beijing’s development as a “global city.”
