AmCham-China is pleased to invite you to an afternoon film screening of the new documentary “Assignment-China: The Week That Changed The World.”

Richard Nixon’s visit to China in February 1972 changed the course of history – reshaping the global balance of power and opening the door to the establishment of relations between the People’s Republic and the United States.

Reported and narrated by US-China Institute Senior Fellow Mike Chinoy, formerly CNN’s Senior Asia Correspondent and Beijing Bureau Chief, Mr. Chinoy will be at the screening to answer questions. The film includes interviews with reporters who made the trip and former officials to tell the story of one of the most important historical moments of the 20th century.

This new documentary was recently covered in the International Herald Tribune:
Global China: Part of an Occasional Series of Presentations focusing on China's Expanding Global Role

AmCham-China and the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center for Global Policy are pleased to invite you to a lunch presentation with Vikram Nehru who will discuss the future role of Southeast Asia. With Europe in crisis, election-year rollout in America, and the Arab Spring in full bloom, the world's economic hopes in 2012 rest with continued dynamism in Asia. By "Asia", though, most commentators mean China and, to a lesser extent, India. Usually forgotten in the shadows of these two giants are the ten countries of Southeast Asia. But China's rise as a regional power has triggered the re-engagement of the United States with Asia, bringing Southeast Asia suddenly into sharp focus. Southeast Asia and its neighboring South China Sea will be the location where China's growing economic muscle will make initial contact against the existing global power structure.

Can Southeast Asia continue to thrive in the shadow of its two neighboring giants, a world economy teetering once again on the brink of economic crisis, and rising tensions in the Asia-Pacific region as the two largest economies in the world seek a new power equilibrium?

Vikram Nehru was recently appointed Senior Associate and Bakrie Chair in Southeast Asian Studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington DC. Prior to joining Carnegie, Mr. Nehru had a long career in the World Bank, where he held many senior management positions, the last being Chief Economist and Director for Poverty Reduction, Economic Management, Private and Financial Sector Development in the World Bank's East Asia and Pacific Region.

The Carnegie–Tsinghua Center brings together top experts from China and the international community to engage in collaborative dialogue and research with an aim to identify constructive solutions to today’s common global challenges. The Center was established in April 2010 through a cooperative agreement between the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and Tsinghua University School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

China has achieved enormous economic success in the past three decades and the financial system has played an important role in driving this growth. At the moment China’s economic development is at a critical point as the world faces financial challenges and China continues to play an increasingly important role in the world economy.
