AmCham-China is a member-driven organization with an expanding national presence. The Tianjin Chapter draws its strength from members located in Tianjin working together. Programs and events are developed for and by Tianjin businesspeople.

Headquartered in Beijing, AmCham-China operates member-led chapters in Tianjin and Central China (Wuhan). AmCham-China was formally registered with the Ministry of Civil Affairs in 1991 and it is the only officially licensed AmCham in China. Unaffiliated with any branch of government, AmCham-China is a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the business success of its members.

On a regular basis the US Embassy gives exclusive briefings to AmCham-China members on the latest policy changes affecting US companies doing business in China. At these high profile events, members gain valuable insights on China’s macroeconomic policies and learn about important US-China bilateral activities first hand from the Embassy.

The Provincial Trips program is a critical AmCham-China resource for member companies looking to expand their operations and capture new markets in China. Through this popular program, members access government officials, local business development decision makers and area business leaders who provide updates and information to help members evaluate investment opportunities. AmCham-China is the preferred channel for members when dealing with issues affecting US-China trade relations. In Tianjin, the chamber provides a common, collective voice to issues affecting the local American business community. The chamber regularly meets directly with representatives of both the US and Chinese governments, to address such issues as the drafting and revising of laws and regulations that address market access, human resources, tax policy, and transparency, among others. Michael Hart is the Vice Chair of the AmCham-China, Tianjin Chapter Executive Committee, and the Managing Director of the Jones Lang LaSalle, Tianjin office.

The AmCham-China, Tianjin Chapter has more than 100 members and gives participants access to key decision makers in China’s fourth largest city.

My company joined the Tianjin Chapter because it is a locally run, member-led business organization that helps make us more successful. The combination of national resources available through AmCham-China with the participation and contributions from other Tianjin members is the key.

Every year the chamber hosts a number of key events including our popular Fourth of July celebration, a Charity Golf tournament in the Spring, the Fall Classic Golf tournament and our popular Concession Tour, which allows visitors to access a number of Tianjin’s architectural treasures from the colonial period a century ago. Industry events also provide updates on staff salaries, changes to tax and employment laws and updates on the property markets as well as other key sector changes.

The chamber has also held events which connect members to the US Embassy staff and also has organized events where Tianjin Chapter members have met with the local Party Secretary, as well as Vice-Mayors and the Tianjin Mayor. The Tianjin Chapter also contributes to the chamber’s annual White Paper and advocates for specific changes in the city. The city leadership has responded to many of our concerns illustrating both the responsiveness of the local government and the value they place on input and observations and suggestions from the AmCham-China, Tianjin Chapter.

Tianjin was and continues to be a thriving port and industrial base. Japanese, Korean, European and American firms have set up bases of operation in the city thanks to a large well-educated population and a strong transportation infrastructure. In recent years the hospitality and service industries have begun to grow as well. This has translated into a city that has a broad economic base, an international flavor and an increasing array of retail and entertainment options. Our members represent all of these industries plus many others, and are able to share insights into the opportunities available and the best business practices for achieving success in Tianjin.
