Statement on Tariff Announcements

Attributable to William Zarit, Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China:

The American Chamber of Commerce in China membership, through its recent Business Climate Survey, indicated it wants a level playing field and reciprocal treatment to improve market access in China. After many years of discussions with the Chinese government, yielding only marginal progress, the U.S. Administration apparently feels the pressure of tariffs will move the Chinese to address American business concerns.

However, blunt and often counter-productive import tariffs may not effectively bring about the desired changes in China’s unfair industrial policies. We hope that both governments take a solution-oriented approach based on fairness and reciprocal treatment to resolve the current trade disagreements.
