A top food safety official delivered an exclusive policy debriefing to members from both AmCham China and the European Chamber of Commerce on Nov. 18. Director General Lin Wei from the Bureau of Import and Export Food Safety, which is part of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China (AQSIQ), identified the latest developments in AQSIQ’s role after the “New Safety Law” issued in October, AQSIQ’s challenges in regulation in the New Normal and plans for new regulations on food and cosmetics imports and exports over the next two years.

AQSIQ's list of top new challenges includes the complexity of the global food supply chain, increasing frequency of food safety issues with global impacts, insufficient industry efforts and attention to food quality and safety and new food safety issues brought on by new business models such as e-commerce.

Lin said food safety is a complicated issue both in China and abroad which urgently requires global governance. He encouraged companies to positively participate in the China-US-EU Food Safety Summit in 2016.
