Company: Raffles Medical

Position: General Manager for China

Hometown: Singapore

How did you arrive in your position at Raffles Medical?

After a 5 year stint in an operational and clinical role with a major international healthcare provider, I moved to business development and strategy with a security firm, driving mergers and acquisitions.

The Chair of Raffles Medical told me about the expansion plans into China with a vision that resonated with me, and the rest is history.

What is happening in the healthcare field in China recently?

Many companies are moving into the evolving and growing healthcare field. For many it will be their first foray in healthcare, and they have allocated billions of dollars into these ventures.

The Chinese government has started to recognize the public healthcare system's deficiencies, such as long waiting times and a public mindset of seeking out hospital care as their first stop for treatment. There is a massive need to right-site these patients who can be treated in community health centers. Some cities are making experimental attempts at a robust primary care system. With a lack of general practitioners and family physician teams, most of healthcare is hospital centric, with almost all medical and surgical teams being hospital based.

Companies should watch the evolution of the Chinese healthcare system as its development could impact private treatment centers, which have been able to provide primary and tertiary care for paying patients, including foreigners who live in China.

Have you read any good books lately?

Management books, but Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People stands out. The principles discussed are highly applicable in the workplace. The book has impacted how I view myself, my actions, my thoughts and others too.

What’s the best advice you have ever received?

"Look after your patients well, and the business will look after itself." (Raffles Medical's motto has similarities – To Our Patients, Our Best). I always try to stand by this advice given to me by my mentor when I first stepped into private practice, and have been grateful for the privilege, the trust and confidence given wholly to me by my patients to look after their health and wellbeing at all times.
