Markel Hübinette, ConocoPhillips
Campaign Statement
Dear AmCham China Members,
My name is Markel Hübinette, Vice President of ConocoPhillips Company and President of ConocoPhillips China, and I am honored to seek your support for the AmCham China Board of Governors.
At a time of unprecedented complexity in U.S.-China relations, steady and experienced leadership at AmCham China is more critical than ever. We believe energy trade and investment as an important component of the US-China economic relationship with tremendous upside potential. Energy plays a critical role in maintaining strategic stability between our two countries. As global energy security is a goal that both Beijing and Washington share, increased engagement and collaboration on energy – by both business and government – can be a valuable way to build trust, understanding, and mutual benefit.
ConocoPhillips has been a pioneer in U.S.-China energy cooperation and a committed partner in China’s high-quality energy development. Over the years, we’ve led numerous energy-focused roundtables and events through AmCham that have helped foster meaningful partnerships between the two countries. This legacy has shaped my perspective and fueled my commitment to serving as a proven bridge between the two sides — a role I believe is essential in today’s evolving landscape.
China holds a special place in my heart. I first traveled here as a backpacker in 1998, an experience that sparked a deep and abiding passion for this country and has since taken me to over 30 provinces. My contributions to the energy industry in China were recognized in September 2025 when I was honored with the Chinese Government Friendship Award. This award is more than a personal honor; it is a testament to the power of constructive engagement and reflects my proven ability to build trust at the highest levels—a capability I am determined to leverage on behalf of all AmCham members.
As a proud Chairman Circle member for the past four years, I have actively participated in a wide range of AmCham events — including the Appreciation Dinner, DC Door Knock, Business Climate Survey Launch, White Paper Delivery Meetings and Chapter events— sharing actionable insights on navigating China’s dynamic business environment.
If elected, I will focus my efforts on a clear, three-pillar platform:
- Championing Constructive Dialogue: I will advocate for a more frank and pragmatic U.S.-China relationship, working to elevate AmCham’s positioning, role, and visibility in bilateral discussions. By encouraging more global executives to visit and engage with China firsthand, we can foster deeper understanding, build trust, and support long-term business success.
- Driving Energy Cooperation Agenda: As a dedicated advocate for the energy sector, I will promote U.S.-China energy cooperation and policies that support energy security and the global energy transition. ConocoPhillips is willing to continue taking a leading role in the newly refreshed AmCham Energy Industry Group, spearheading its initiatives and activities to ensure it delivers maximum impact for its members.
- Strengthening Member Engagement: I am committed to being an active and visible member of the AmCham community — participating in events, serving as a panelist, and contributing thought leadership. Drawing on my experience leading a major multinational, I aim to represent the perspectives of large enterprises while fostering collaboration across the diverse AmCham membership.
With your support, I am confident we can reinforce AmCham China’s vital role as a stabilizing force — helping members navigate the complexities of the U.S.-China relationship and seize opportunities for long-term success.
Sincerely,
Markel Hübinette President, ConocoPhillips China
